Established in 2017, Accessible Accommodation Specialists provide individual housing solutions for people with disability and their families in the Geelong and surrounding region. As a registered Specialist Disability Accommodation (STA) provider with the NDIA, all purpose-built houses and units are architecturally designed for low to high physical support needs. They are also close to transportation and community facilities to enable independent living and community inclusion.
“Hello. My name is Vilay Hogan and I’m passionate about providing specialist disability accommodation and know first-hand the barriers faced for those seeking this, when in 2012, my younger brother Keo sustained a spinal cord injury from a car accident just 500 meters from his home. Within the blink of an eye, Keo was a quadriplegic and spent the next two years in a nursing home waiting for suitable accommodation. That’s when my journey to establishing specialist disability housing began. There was a major lack of appropriate accommodation for Keo and as his sister and guardian, I just knew that I had to do so something about it.
Through my background in real estate and housing, I made the decision to convert the garage into a modified unit for Keo at our family home. I spent the next three years arming myself with every single bit of information about the industry. I met with allied health professionals, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and was guided by the TAC home modifications team. After a lengthy and intense process, Keo started his independent life in his own modified unit in December 2015. He will always require a carer around the clock, but now he has a place to call home.
After helping Keo on his journey to independent living, I realised that I could help others in the same situation. And so, Accessible Accommodation Specialists was born.
I truly believe in Accessible Accommodation Specialists and just want people with disability to have their own home where they can live independently. Because at the end of the day, if I was in the same situation, that’s the life that I would want to live.”
